Our Process
Reclamation Is a Craft, Not a Shortcut
There's a misconception that reclaimed lumber is simply pulled from old buildings and sold as-is. The reality is far more involved. Transforming raw salvaged timber into reliable, beautiful, code-compliant building materials requires expertise at every stage — from the initial deconstruction to the final milling pass.
Our nine-step process has been refined over 15 years. It ensures that every board leaving our facility meets the highest standards for structural integrity, moisture content, dimensional accuracy, and visual quality.
Sourcing & Assessment
Every piece of reclaimed lumber begins with a lead. Our sourcing team monitors demolition permits, connects with deconstruction companies, and maintains a network of salvage contacts across Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. When a building is scheduled for removal, we assess the structure to identify recoverable timber.
Careful Deconstruction
This is where reclamation diverges from demolition. Instead of a wrecking ball, we use hand tools, careful planning, and skilled labor. Our crews work methodically through a structure, removing lumber piece by piece to preserve the integrity, dimensions, and character of each board and beam.
Transport to Our Facility
Recovered timber is carefully loaded and transported to our 12,000 sq ft facility at 2135 NW 21st Ave in Portland. We use padded load straps and stacking techniques that prevent damage during transit. Our logistics team coordinates multiple salvage runs each week across the Pacific Northwest.
Inspection & Sorting
Once at our facility, every single piece goes through an initial inspection. We sort by species, dimension, condition, and intended use. This is where we make the first critical quality decisions — lumber that doesn't meet our standards is diverted to secondary uses rather than being discarded.
De-nailing & Cleaning
Reclaimed wood is full of history — and full of metal. Old nails, screws, bolts, staples, and other fasteners must be painstakingly removed before any machining can begin. A single missed nail can destroy a saw blade worth hundreds of dollars, so this step demands meticulous attention.
Kiln Drying
Proper moisture content is essential for stability and workability. Our solar-assisted kiln brings reclaimed lumber down to 6-8% moisture content — the sweet spot for interior use. This process also eliminates any insect larvae or mold spores, ensuring the wood is clean and safe for residential and commercial applications.
Grading & Certification
After drying, every piece is graded for structural integrity, appearance, and dimensional accuracy. We use a grading system that accounts for the unique characteristics of reclaimed lumber — nail holes, patina, and checking aren't defects, they're features. But structural soundness is non-negotiable.
Custom Milling
This is where raw reclaimed timber becomes your finished product. Our milling shop can produce virtually any profile, dimension, or finish. Whether you need tongue-and-groove flooring, shiplap siding, dimensional lumber, or custom mantels — we cut it from reclaimed stock to your exact specifications.
Ready for You
The finished product is stored in our climate-controlled showroom and warehouse, ready for pickup or delivery. Every piece of lumber you take home from Lumber Portland has been sourced responsibly, processed carefully, and graded honestly. You get premium reclaimed wood backed by people who genuinely care about what they do.
Quality Assurance
Every Piece. Every Time. No Exceptions.
Reclaimed doesn't mean rough. Our quality standards are rigorous because your projects depend on reliable materials.
Metal-Free Guarantee
Every board passes through a metal detector after de-nailing. We guarantee no embedded fasteners in any piece we sell — protecting your tools and your project.
Moisture Certified
Each piece ships with a verified moisture content reading. Interior-grade lumber is dried to 6-8%. We stand behind those numbers with a moisture guarantee.
Species Verified
We don't guess on species. Every piece is identified by experienced graders who know the difference between Doug Fir and Southern Yellow Pine at a glance.
Origin Documented
Want to know where your wood came from? We maintain origin records for every batch — the building, the city, and the approximate age of the timber.
Common Species
What We Reclaim Most
Douglas Fir
The backbone of Pacific Northwest timber. Tight grain, warm reddish-brown color, exceptional strength. Most of our inventory is old-growth Doug Fir from pre-1940 structures.
Western Red Cedar
Naturally rot-resistant with a beautiful reddish hue. Ideal for exterior applications, siding, and fencing. Highly aromatic when freshly milled.
White Oak
Dense, durable, and water-resistant. Prized for flooring, furniture, and barrel-making. Our reclaimed White Oak comes primarily from industrial and agricultural structures.
Heart Pine
Tight-grain Southern Yellow Pine heartwood. Rich amber color that deepens with age. Exceptionally hard and durable — a favorite for reclaimed flooring.
Redwood
Naturally insect and rot-resistant. Light, workable, and beautiful. We occasionally recover old-growth Redwood from structures along the Southern Oregon coast.
Our Grading System
Three Grades, Clearly Defined
Structural Grade
Meets or exceeds modern building code requirements for load-bearing applications. Minimal checking, no rot, verified species and dimensions. Suitable for structural beams, joists, posts, and headers.
Architectural Grade
Selected for visual appeal while maintaining good structural properties. Some character marks, minor nail holes, and gentle patina. Ideal for feature walls, mantels, shelving, cabinetry, and furniture.
Rustic Grade
Maximum character with prominent nail holes, surface checking, weathering, and natural aging. Perfect for accent walls, decorative applications, signage, and projects where a well-worn aesthetic is desired.
Common Questions
About Our Process
Is reclaimed lumber as strong as new lumber?
In many cases, it's stronger. Old-growth timber has significantly tighter grain than modern plantation-grown wood, which translates to greater density and structural strength. Our grading process verifies that every structural-grade piece meets or exceeds modern code requirements.
Can reclaimed lumber pass building inspections?
Absolutely. Our structural-grade reclaimed lumber is kiln-dried, graded, and documented. We provide species certificates and grade stamps that satisfy building inspectors. We've supplied materials for hundreds of permitted projects in the Portland metro area.
How do you ensure there are no hidden nails?
Every board goes through hand de-nailing followed by a full-length pass through a metal detector. We guarantee that all pieces are fastener-free when they leave our facility. If you ever find a nail in our lumber, we'll replace the piece and refund the original.
What about insects and mold in old wood?
Our kiln-drying process heats the wood to temperatures that eliminate all insect larvae, eggs, and mold spores. The target core temperature of 133°F sustained for the full cycle ensures complete sterilization while preserving the wood's character.
Can you mill reclaimed lumber to custom dimensions?
Yes — that's one of our specialties. Our milling shop can produce virtually any profile or dimension from reclaimed stock. Tongue-and-groove, shiplap, custom mantels, specific board widths — we cut it to your specs.
