The Reclaimed Difference

Floors With History Underfoot

Reclaimed flooring is the single most transformative upgrade you can make to a space. The dense old-growth grain, the warm oxidized tones, the subtle character marks from a century of service — these qualities create a floor that looks like it belongs in the space, not like it was just installed.

We mill all our flooring from salvaged timbers in our Portland facility. Each plank is resawn, kiln-dried to 6-8% moisture content, and precision-milled with tongue-and-groove edges for tight, reliable installation. We offer widths from standard 3.25" strips up to dramatic 12"+ wide planks when available.

Whether you want a smooth, furniture-grade finish or a wire-brushed texture that celebrates every saw mark and nail hole, we can process your flooring to match your vision.

Species Comparison

Choosing the Right Species for Your Floor

Each species brings unique color, hardness, and grain characteristics. The Janka hardness rating measures resistance to denting — higher numbers mean harder floors. For a deeper dive, see our lumber grades guide.

Janka values shown are for reclaimed/old-growth specimens, which are typically denser than modern plantation-grown equivalents. Actual hardness varies by individual board.

Width Options

From Strip to Super-Wide Plank

Wider planks create a more dramatic, open feel and showcase grain patterns, but require flatter subfloors. See our size guide for detailed dimensional specifications.

3.25"

Standard Strip

Classic narrow-plank look. Easiest to install over subfloor irregularities. Most available in Oak and Maple.

5"

Standard Plank

Versatile mid-width. Shows grain pattern well. Available in all species. Our most popular width.

7"

Wide Plank

Popular for farmhouse and rustic aesthetics. Showcases character and grain beautifully. Requires flat subfloor.

9" – 11"

Extra-Wide Plank

Dramatic statement flooring. Limited availability — depends on source material width. Premium pricing applies.

12"+

Super-Wide Plank

Rare old-growth cuts. Extremely limited availability. Often reserved from specific salvage operations. Inquire early.

Finish Options

Surface & Finish Treatments

The right finish enhances the natural beauty of reclaimed wood while protecting it for decades of daily use. We apply finishes in our climate-controlled facility or ship unfinished for site application.

Unfinished

Raw wood, ready for site-applied finish. Allows your installer to sand to final smoothness and apply the stain and topcoat of your choice. Maximum control over final appearance.

Natural Oil

Penetrating hardwax oil finish that soaks into the grain. Matte to satin sheen. Enhances natural color without a plastic film. Easy to spot-repair. Our recommended finish for reclaimed flooring.

Polyurethane

Water-based poly topcoat in satin or semi-gloss. Durable surface film for high-traffic areas. Requires full sanding for future refinishing. Applied in our facility.

Wire-Brushed

Surface texture treatment that removes soft grain and accentuates the hard growth rings. Creates a subtle, tactile relief. Paired with oil or poly finish. Excellent for hiding wear.

Skip-Sanded

Lightly sanded to smooth splinters while preserving surface character — saw marks, minor weathering, and original patina remain visible. Perfect for the "authentic" reclaimed aesthetic.

Custom Stain

Want a specific color? We can apply water-based or oil-based stains to achieve your target tone before topcoating. Bring a sample or reference image and we'll match it on your selected species.

Installation

Installation Tips for Reclaimed Flooring

Reclaimed flooring installs like any tongue-and-groove hardwood, but there are a few details unique to reclaimed material that will help you get the best results.

Our team is happy to discuss installation methods with you, your contractor, or your designer. We've supplied flooring for hundreds of Portland-area projects and can recommend experienced installers familiar with reclaimed wood.

Acclimate the wood

Bring flooring into the room 5-7 days before installation. Open bundles and stack with spacers so air can circulate. Target room conditions: 60-80°F, 30-50% relative humidity.

Verify subfloor flatness

Wide planks (7"+) require a flat subfloor — within 3/16" over 10 feet. Use leveling compound or plywood underlayment as needed. This is the single biggest factor in a successful wide-plank installation.

Rack the boards

Reclaimed flooring comes in random lengths. Spend time "racking" — laying out boards before fastening to distribute lengths, color variation, and character marks evenly across the room.

Pre-drill near edges

Dense old-growth wood is harder than modern lumber. Pre-drilling at board ends prevents splitting and ensures tight face-nail connections, especially in Fir and Heart Pine.

Use compatible fasteners

Nail-down installation with 18-gauge cleats is standard for 3/4" tongue-and-groove. Glue-down works for 1/2" thickness over concrete slabs. Avoid floating installation for reclaimed wide-plank.
